Introducing: Spacolucia

Today we’ve got you something a little dark and eerie, but a big sound for it.

Introducing – Spacolucia

Spacolucia

How this guy has gone unnoticed for so long I don’t know. The production quality on his tracks is certainly label worthy in my opinion. With a strong Burial vibe, his percussion arrangement leaves the listener gripped as dark pads surround their mind… and then the bass drops! All his tracks feature excellent sub work, and the second drop in Relinquish rivals the best.

Expect big things. Here’s our interview:

Dubstep Origins: First up, what’s your name, how old are you and where are you based?

Spacolucia: Julio, 26 and currently residing in Bristol.

DO: How long have you been producing for, and how would you describe your style?

S: About four years, but I’ve been writing songs for a lot longer than that. Not really sure what my style is but I try to make melodic progressive music with dubsteppish rhythms (at the moment). My friends tell me it’s all quite dark and depressing!

DO: Who or what introduced you to dubstep?

S: Vex’d and Burial grabbed my attention when they first came out and I’ve been dipping in and out ever since.

DO: Which artists are currently influencing your production?

S: Artists that have really got under my skin in the past year have been Ital Tek, Moderat, Jon Hopkins, stuff on Echodub and Hotflush recordings.

DO: In your eyes, what is dubstep as a genre?

S: What I love about dubstep is there is a lot more freedom in it than people give it credit for. Ultimately it’s known for the bass but there is a lot more to it than just that and people are making some really melodic, beautiful stuff at the moment. In answer to your question, I have no idea!

DO: What’s on your playlist at the moment?

S: Been listening to a lot of stuff on soundcloud – a guy called Solitude has been releasing a load of awesome ambient dubstep mixes so have been listening to them a lot, keep on going back to the Moderat album and (cough) been getting back into my jazz again like Mingus and Dinah Washington more recently.

DO: Anything else you’d like to add?

S: Will be making most of my stuff freely downloadable over the next few months so make sure you check back!

Good stuff then! In addition to that you can download a free 3-track by this guy here http://spacolucia.bandcamp.com/ It’s not dubstep, but well worth a listen!

Couple of tracks for you all, more on his soundcloud http://soundcloud.com/spacolucia
